New York – September 23, 2018, The High-level Meeting on the Geneva Ministerial Conference on Afghanistan held today at the UN Headquarters in New York with the participation of senior officials from more than 40 countries and organizations.
The meeting was opened by a keynote speech by H.E. Salahuddin Rabbani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and opening remarks by Ambassador Tadamichi Yamamoto; UN Special Representative for Afghanistan and Deputy Finance Minister, Mr. Khalid Payenda.
H.E. Foreign Minister Rabbani outlined the Afghan perspective on three main elements of discussions under the Geneva Conference namely self-reliance, peace and connectivity and highlighted the relevant achievements made since the Brussels Conference of 2016 as well as the challenges facing Afghanistan.
Foreign Minister Rabbani, among other issues, stressed the importance of continued support to Afghanistan-centered regional cooperation efforts including under RECCA and HoA-IP.
The meeting continued with presentations on the agenda of the Geneva Ministerial Conference, the draft communique and the Geneva Mutual Accountability Framework made respectively by Ambassador Yamamoto, Deputy Foreign Minister Adela Raz and Deputy Finance Minister Payenda followed by discussions including interventions by senior officials from various countries and organizations.
