The Midterm Review of the Implementation of the Vienna Programme of Action for LLDCs was co-organized by the UNESCAP, UNECE and UN-OHRLLS from 11-12 February 2019 in Bangkok.
The meeting, attended by high-level officials from LLDCs, UN, regional and international organizations, included 6 sessions on priority areas under VPoA: Fundamental Transit Policy Issues; Connectivity and Transport Infrastructure Development; ICT Connectivity, Sustainable Energy and Regional Integration; International Trade and Trade Facilitation; Structural Economic Transformation; and Means of Implementation.
Mr. Hassan Soroosh, Director General for Economic Cooperation, MoFA represented Afghanistan in the meeting. He had two presentations on regional integration and means of implementation. He briefed the participants about Afghanistan’s vision for regional cooperation and the ongoing activities and priority projects under RECCA and HoA-IP. He also spoke about the domestic resources, ODA and aid effectiveness, private sector participation and investment promotion as well as South-South and Triangular Cooperation. Mr. Soroosh presented a number of recommendations including on the need for greater synergy among regional cooperation platforms and transport corridors as well as the need for greater collaboration in areas such as policy coordination and dialogue, research, investment promotion as well as capacity building.
The outcome of the Euro‐Asian regional midterm review and its recommendations will be presented as substantive input into deliberations at the global midterm review of the VPoA which will take place in December this year in New York.
